As thrilling as it has been to make the Olympics and win national championships, the day I found the sport of fencing was actually the most life changing. When I was young, I struggled in school, lacked self-confidence and often felt lost, but through the ancient sport of fencing I found my passion, my voice and ultimately the life lessons that have led me to achieve far more than anyone thought was possible.
Fencing is a sport that is about taking on challenges head on. Since that first day I picked up a saber and pulled down my fencing mask, I have never stopped trying to hone the skills that have led me to success on and off the field of play.
In every aspect of my journey, I've been the underdog. I went to a Division III university, Brandeis University that had never produced an olympian in any sport and I brought home a Silver Medal. I taught full-time while training in the evenings The US hadn't won a medal in our event since 1948.
